The Ethereality of "Minari"

Minari is a movie unlike anything I've ever seen before. Cinematically, it is absolutely astounding. The acting is incredibly and it is the perfect balance of comedy, drama and devastation. But the whole movie feels comforting because of how whimsical and beautiful it is.

Not only does it look ethereal but the message and plot is so incredibly beautiful.

The story follows a family who has recently just moved to a very rural area in Arkansas to live on a farm. Jacob (played by Steven Yeun) is a father looking to start a farm and live out the American Dream while the rest of his family follows along. His young son, David (played by Alan Kim) has to adapt to this new and odd life while also growing up at the same time. David's grandmother comes to spend some time with their family from Korea but this keeps David's eye wide open and curious about her.

'Minari' Trailer:

As the director Lee Isaac Chung says, "This movie is all about family" (Golden Globes 2021). It truly is all about family and that is one of the reasons it is so magical. We follow a family that has virtually nothing try to adapt to an extremely difficult and slow environment, but Jacob is always looking for the better. He wants his family to succeed in this place. Steven Yeun is nominated for Best Actor in a leading role and he truly deserves it for this part.

Along with the beauty of family comes the beauty of curiosity for David. He is growing up also in a very difficult environment and at the age where everything is a question to him. His character made me think and relate to him while also understanding our differences.

More artistically, the movie has a very light filter to it. It is almost always sunny which shows the better days that are coming for their family. The music is one of the most magnificent soundtracks I have ever heard, composed by Emile Mosseri, it truly does elevate each scene without taking too much attention away from the drama. The choice of camera movements was also so wonderful in this film with a wide variety of wide shots to capture their whole surroundings in their world around them for the viewer to get the ultimate experience.

I will definitely be watching out for this movie that this years Oscars and am crossing my fingers that it gets best original score and screenplay.

As always, I can only say good things about this movie but here are some clips and links to songs to check out if you think you would like to watch this movie.
